The kitchen window’s space reflecting a
day’s worth
The cup of ginger-chamomile tea briming
The soft steam gently streaming
The unsympathetic morning air a frigid
companion
The evident sky luminescing in resplendent blue
The ground’s complexities blend in white
coverings
The lone feeder hanging full with openness
The mix of seeds standing to invite sharing
The backyard’s trees however bare and stark
The birds perch upon and across the mother
tree’s arms
The feathered creatures gather to feed away
the cold
The single-minded nuthatch climbs the
trunk’s ladders
The secretive juncos flock below the feeder
in a quiet repast
The plump mourning doves arduously peck away
at the snow
The yellow finches pitch smartly back and
forth for seed
The red headed woodpecker’s bill does not
compliment the small feeder
The diminutive chickadees dart in and then,
in a wink, flit away
The stately Mr. and Mrs Cardinal are away at
a distant Oak top
The morning gradually slips by when… Wait!
The Cooper’s Hawk menaces up high at the
tree top!
The feeder space empties into a silence as
the creatures flee
The morning tea is done now; and so - it
will be.
